Network Controller WoL Failure
After updating the office desktop to Slackware 15.0, the system would not awaken from a wake-on-lan (WoL) magic packet. In Slackware 14.2 and previous releases this has been functioning for many years. Finding the root cause was a short journey because of initial trials and errors testing Slackware 15.0.
r8168 module package and removing the
r8169 module blacklisting resolved the problem. The caveat is a return of the original paper cut of the
ethtool failing in runlevel 1.
Newer is not always better.
Problem solved but Yet Another Example why updating computers is so frustrating.
