Inode Extent Could Be Narrower

One day I was greeted with a cryptic message when booting the office desktop:

Inode XXXXX extent tree (at level 2) could be narrower. IGNORED.

Searching the web found a common reply from the Cliff Clavins of the world, that the message is harmless.

The message annoyed me.

After backing up I was about to wipe and reformat the partition and restore files. On a hunch I instead dropped to runlevel 1, unmounted the partition, and manually ran fsck without the -a option. Sure enough, I was prompted to fix the problem.

Thus far the warning has not returned.
