Writing for Users
Writing is about communicating ideas. Language provides a variety of ways to express ideas. Yet certain words sound puffy and pompous. Using such words discourage readers. Nobody wants to feel like an ignoramus. Consider the following words.
Assist: Two syllables. One syllable will do. Use the word help.
Desideratum: Use the word desire.
Efficacious: Use effective or efficient.
Hegemony: Use influence or power.
Utilize: Three syllables. One syllable will do. Use the word use.
Methodology: The suffix ology means “the study of.” Methodology means the study of methods. Use the words method or methodical. Really really. When reading the word methodology, mentally replace the word with method or methodical. Works every time.
