We’re From the Phone Company

I remember the Saturday Night Live Lily Tomlin “Ernestine” routine about how people from the phone company do not care. “We don’t care. We don’t have to. We're the Phone Company.”

That is the attitude of people at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, et. al., as well as all current phone providers.

Users are now the product. The people mining the data don’t care. They think and act that way for the same reason dogs and cats lick themselves — because they can.

“We will data mine you. We don’t care. We don’t have to. We're Google/Facebook/Microsoft/Phone Company.”

The only way to stop the data mining or throw sand in the gears is through individual action. Nobody else is going to help.
